Wait Until 8th Pledge
The “Wait Until 8th” pledge encourages parents to hold off on giving their children smartphones until the children are in 8th grade. To help prevent children from feeling socially isolated, the pledge does not go into effect until ten other families from a child’s grade and school also take the pledge. The pledge, which does not include phones that just support calls and texting, was originally created by a group of parents as a response to the increasing pressure to purchase smartphones for young children.
The “Wait Until 8th” website explains the dangers of giving young children smartphones, which can be distracting and addicting and can expose children to explicit information and images as well as cyber bullying. The pledge is intended to create community support for parents who wish to wait until eighth grade before getting their child a smartphone.
