The “TRUCE Guide for Using Children’s Books to Promote Play” helps combat the issues of less play time at home due to increased screen time and less play time at school due to increased focus on direct instruction. As the guide explains, creative, imaginative play builds vital skills for school and life, and screen time is not play time. Book lists are divided into six themes, each with an explanation of how the play it promotes is important to children’s development. The six themes are: cardboard boxes; capes, wands and dress ups; being bored; building forts or play houses; playing outdoors; and playing indoors.

TRUCE (Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children's Entertainment) creates resources for and provides information to parents and educators about the harmful effects of commercialism, media and marketing on children’s play, learning and behavior and recommends ways to counteract these effects.
