In this 5-minute video, Professor Sherry Turkle describes a "crisis of empathy" associated with overuse of technology, including a decline in open-ended, spontaneous conversation and decreases in markers for empathy in college students. In response, Turkle recommends reclaiming face to face conversation and using cell phones mindfully.

Sherry Turkle is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, and the founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.
