Family Media Plan

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Family Media Plan website has two tools for families: the Family Media Plan and the Media Time Calculator. The Family Media Plan encourages parents to think about how media use may interfere with important activities like family time and outdoor play and helps parents create concrete goals and rules for their families based on their own values. The media plan can be specific to each child in a family and covers such topics as good digital citizenship, what spaces in the house are designated screen-free, where phones should be kept at night, and what kind of recreational screen time is allowed. The media plan can be completed and then printed and posted in the house where everyone can see it.

The Media Time Calculator allows parents and children to calculate and see the amount of time they spend on screens as opposed to the amount of time they spend time in school, reading, doing chores, cooking or in other screen-free activities.

Both of these tools are also available in Spanish.
