As a response to the growing childhood obesity epidemic and the increased time children spend in sedentary activities, “Obesity and Overuse of Electronic Media” explores the link between obesity and electronic media use. Other health risks connected to overuse of media are described, and guidelines for how parents should limit screen time and increase physical activity are provided. A frequently asked questions (FAQ) section addresses issues of educational versus recreational television, excessive screen time at daycare facilities, and limits on screen time for active children.

This report was created by Iowa State Professor Kimberly Greder for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, which seeks to connect the residents of Iowa with the University’s research and resources, education and partnership opportunities. “Obesity and Overuse of Electronic Media” is available in both Spanish and English.
